The Pirates of Penzance

The Pirates of Penzance (or The Slave of Duty) is a comic opera that first premiered on December 31, 1879. The opera follows the story of Frederic who falls in love with Major-General Stanley’s daughter Mabel. Frederic’s indenture states that he must be apprenticed to a band of pirates until his 21st birthday. However, Frederic was born on the 29th of February, meaning he would not be released from his apprenticeship when he completes his 21st year. Instead, he will have to serve another 63 years after his 21st year to reach his official 21st birthday, but at least Mabel agrees to wait for him.

The Pirates of Penzance was adapted into a British-American romantic musical comedy film in 1983. The film stars Kevin Kline, Angela Lansbury, Linda Ronstadt, George Rose, and Rex Smith.
